Description:
Enrofloxacin belongs to a new unique class of chemical compounds called the Fluroquinolones. The antimicrobial properties have been enhanced and adverse effects reduced through various gradual modifications of the molecule.
The antimicrobial efficacy of Enrofloxacin encompasses broad spectrum of Gram negative and gram positive organisms. The clinically significant mycoplasmas are also covered by the activity spectrum of this new chemotherapeutic agent.

Exceptional activity of Enrofloxacin against these organisms appear to be a function of its mode of action through inhibition of DNA-gyrase, an essential enzyme.

Enrofloxacin inhibits DNA synthesis and rapidly eradicates bacteria before they can develop resistance to the drug.

Enrofloxacin is not susceptible to degradation by any known bacterial enzymes.Resistance through chromosomal mutation is rarely encountered. Also, bacteria lose their virulence once they mutate.

Enrofloxacin at dosages in excess of ten times the therapeutic level does not elicit significant changes in the vital parameters of laboratory animals. Silver sulphadiazine: Silver sulphadiazine is an intermediate acting sulphonamide.
It is an antimetabolite, interfering with the normal production of RNA, protein synthesis, and microbial replication mechanisms.

Para- amino benzoic acid (PABA), pteridines, glutamic acid, and the enzyme
Dihydropterate synthase interact to form dihydropteroic acid, the immediate precursor to dihydrofolic acid. Dihydropteric acid is enzymatically converted to dihydrofolic acid by dihydrofolate synthase, followed by another enzymatic conversion of dihydrofolic acid to tetrahydrofolic acid (THFA) via dihydrofolate reductase (DHFR). THFEA continues on in this pathway to permit RNA production and bacterial production. Sulphonamide inhibit the biosynthesis of folic acid by being mistakenly substituted for PABA. However, there are sufficient structural differences between the sulphonamides and PABA to not allow the conversion to dihydropteroic acid, hence inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis.

Indication:
Auriko Ear Drop is indicated as a treatment for canine external ear infections complicated by bacterial and fungal (yeast ) organisms susceptible to Enrofloxacin and /or silver sulphadiazine.

DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION
Pretreatment
Prior to treatment, complication of basic diagnostics (physical examination, ear cleaning, cytology, microbial culture and otoscopy) is advisable. Additional studies (skin scraping, allergy testing, endocrine assays and skin biopsy) may be required in some cases.
Exudate or debris within the canal may adversely compromise diagnostic and therapeutic goals.
If exudates/ debris is present, it may be advisable to delay diagnostics and treatment until after gentle aural lavage with a non-irritating ear cleaning solution has been performed.
