The condenser is generally connected to a source of water to supply cooling for the hot vapour. The best method is to attach the input hose to the condenser at the end of the heated flask. And attach the outflow hose nearest the heated flask.
To make the boiling uniformly throughout the process, boiling chips are added to the liquid in the flask. The chips are generally made of broken ceramics or hard plastic.
Heating the flask also requires special attention. Most of the time liquid that is used for distillation is flammable so a direct flame is not recommended. Most of the time heating mantles or sand baths are used to heat the flasks.
